I have two daughters currently attending schools in North Kansas City Schools. One is a third grader at Davidson and the other is a freshman at North Kansas City High School. Prior to attending these schools, my daughters attended Winnwood, Crestview, Eastgate and Northgate. My home is in the North Kansas City High School attendance area, my small business is located near West Englewood Elementary, our family is deeply invested in the community of North Kansas City Schools. It is critically important to me that students in all areas of our district boundaries have a voice of advocacy on our School Board. I want to be this voice, and ensure representation for all of our students. I will work to support and advocate for all students, teachers and staff members to give them the strongest opportunity to do their jobs and do their jobs well. I believe in the district’s vision and mission and want to use my voice and influence to make a difference for all students.
I have been actively involved in my daughters’ schools since 2014, when my oldest child began kindergarten. I attend every caregiver event hosted at their schools and I support their teachers through ongoing partnership. I am currently a Davidson Elementary School PTA Member and attend the monthly meetings. Over the ten years that my daughters’ have attended NKCS they have always attended schools that the district has identified as Title 1 schools based on the federal Title 1 guidelines. I have attended the Title 1 parent meetings at their schools and offered my input and suggestions for the Title 1 plans being created to support student needs. For the past two years, I have served as a member of the NKCS Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Advisory Council. I am currently on the NKCS Bond Community Involvement Committee. As a business owner I am a West Englewood Elementary Business Partner. I am further involved in my community in the following ways: Northland Shepherd Center Board Member; Active Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; Dollars and Sense Representative in conjunction with 100 Black Men of Greater KC; MO State Director of Academic Decathlon; Gladstone Chamber of Commerce Member; Northland Chamber of Commerce Member; and an Old Pike Country Club Board Member.
My vision for North Kansas City Schools is to provide all children, regardless of their background, race, religion, gender, or need with a high-quality education to help them achieve their full potential. My vision is also to ensure that we provide a safe learning environment that meets each student where they are and provides them with the individualized supports that they need to success. A key priority as a board member in the coming year, is to support our new Superintendent, Dr. Daniels, and do everything in my control to help her, and in turn our district, succeed. One way that I could provide support to her would be to give accurate and authentic feedback from my vantage point not just as a board member but as a parent, community member and business owner in the district. Another priority would be to diversify our staff to more equally reflect the diversity of our student population. The final priority I have identified would be to support our Superintendent and Cabinet Members in looking at the current teacher workload and making sure the programs, curriculum, and initiatives that are in place are working to maximize student growth, engagement and success.
